Best Lenses for Canon DSLRs for Low Budget Independent Filmmaking | My TOP 5 Recommendations

In this Blog Post I will give you my top 5 lens recommendations which are the best lenses for Canon DSLRs for all the Independent Filmmakers. This is an accompany post for this article that I have written in my Blog, where I have given my top recommendations of best cameras for Indie Filmmaking in all kinds of budget.

Note : This article is mainly focused towards all the filmmakers in mind and people looking for a camera mainly for video recording purpose. These picks may not be well suited for all your photography needs, however all the lenses in this list are mainly photographic lenses and not cine lenses which can be more than capable for a particular video shoot.

1. Canon 50 mm f/1.8 Prime : Around Rs. 8,000/-

This is the must-have lens for any beginner to even professional Independent Filmmakers and are in the top of my best lenses for Canon DSLRs list. The focal length gives you a tighter frame, even more compressed if you are using an APS-C sensor camera, like the Canon EOS 700D

or the Canon EOS 80D, which can be good for dialogue scenes and close-up shots. This lens is the cheapest way you can get the shallow depth of field and the dreamy cinematic look everyone craves for. Thus the lens is rightly known as the “Nifty Fifty”. This is a fast lens, that means it has a wide f/1.8 aperture which is quite capable in low light. The lens is considerably sharp. Or if you want to invest a bit more to get the lens with even wider aperture, then you can also go for the Canon 50mm f/1.4 Prime Lens. The build, low light capability, bokeh quality, and sharpness of the pricier lens is worth the extra penny. Note that, both the lens lack any kind of optical in body image stabilization mechanism. Note that I have redirected the lenses to their BEST BUY links, you can BUY directly from the links and that will also help my blog to grow.

2. Sigma 17 – 50 mm f/2.8 : Around Rs. 35,000/-

This is the second pick in my list of best lenses for Canon DSLRs. This is a very good lens choice at this price point. The focal range is very usable for most scenarios. You will get a considerably wide constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the focal range, which is very good for low light shoots. The lens gets to 17mm at its widest. This is the only wide angle lens in this list. 17mm is quite a good focal length for wide angle shots when used with a full frame camera, or even with APS-C sensor cameras.

3. Sigma 35 mm f/1.4 : Around Rs. 60,000/-

Prime Lenses are always better than Zoom Lenses when it comes to sharpness of the image. This is one of my most favourite lenses. It can work as a 50mm Lens when used with an APS-C sensor camera. It produces very nice dreamy kind of bokeh which looks very cinematic. Please note, that if you are going to use it with a Canon 5D Mark IV, then it can create some weird vignetting rings in your images at certain apertures. You just need to turn off peripheral illumination correction in your camera settings. This lens is in the third position in my list of best lenses for Canon DSLRs in 2017.

4. Canon EF 24 – 105 mm f/4L IS : Around Rs. 60,000/-

If you like to have a versatile lens with a wide zoom range, then this is probably be the best option to look for. It covers a nice and wide zoom range of 24mm to 105mm with a constant aperture of f/4. The lens is quite sharp throughout its zoom range and the image quality is very usable. This is a high quality Canon L Series Lens with in-body optical image stabilization at a very affordable price point.

5. Canon EF 24 – 70 mm f/2.8L : Around Rs. 1,00,000/-

This is the most expensive and most versatile lens in this list of my best lenses for Canon DSLRs. This is that one lens with which you can finish an entire shoot with confidence. I can’t recommend this lens enough. There is also a f/4 version of the lens, which you can get at much lower price. If you are planning to buy that lens, then I would suggest you to consider the 24mm-105mm f/4 lens instead, because that offers almost the same features with additional zoom range. BEST BUY links to all the lens are given.
